　　　　约翰（弗雷德·阿斯泰尔 Fred Astaire 饰）是一名极富才华的舞蹈家，歌手卡德（维克托·摩尔 Victor Moore 饰）是约翰最好的朋友兼搭档，两人之间的友谊十分深厚。约翰一心想要迎娶自己的青梅竹马玛格丽特（Betty Furness 饰），但卡德却并不看好这桩婚事。为了搅黄约翰的婚礼，卡德找到了各种借口拖延时间，导致约翰最终错过了结婚典礼。愤怒玛格丽特和父亲要求约翰拿来两万五千美元，方可得到他们的原谅，无奈之下约翰只得踏上了筹钱的旅途。                                    
    约翰和卡德来到了纽约，在一场意外中邂逅了名为佩妮（金格尔·罗杰斯 Ginger Rogers 饰）的女子。一番波折之后，约翰发现佩妮是一名舞蹈教练，不仅如此，两人的节奏亦十分合拍，于是决定组成搭档。
