　　　　位于加拿大大西洋省份新斯科舍省（Nova Scotia）的某个偏远小镇，生活着命运多舛的女人莫娣（莎莉·霍金斯 Sally Hawkins 饰），她童年患上了小儿麻痹，痊愈后落下了关节炎的毛病，导致只能蹒跚而行，备受歧视。父母去世后，她寄居姨妈家里，却感受不到亲人的温暖。偶然机会，她看到一则招聘女佣的启示，虽然每月只有稀薄的1美元，但是她依然希望借此走出令人窒息的姨妈家。雇佣她的男人名叫埃弗里特·刘易斯（伊桑·霍克 Ethan Hawke 饰），他性格古怪内敛，脾气阴晴不定。莫娣最初饱受苛责甚至打骂，但她似乎认定了这个栖身之所，不仅努力打扫房间，还利用闲暇在墙壁上画出美丽的图案。而终于有一天，莫娣的天赋被人们所发现了……
