　　　　一场大雨过后，平静的城市里，植物上的水滴中正萌发出奇怪的生物……                                    
    供职于卫生署的伊丽莎白（Brooke Adams 饰）在郊外采集到一株小型植物，她向丈夫杰弗里解释这很可能是新发现的物种。与此同时，伊丽莎白的同事马修（唐纳德•萨瑟兰 Donald Sutherland 饰）正因为一丝不苟的执法而遭到报复。第二天，伊丽莎白惊奇的发现杰弗里行为反常，举止木讷，伊丽莎白请求马修的帮助，随后他们发现有更多人状态发生了变化，伊丽莎白更目击杰弗里与一群陌生人接头，不久，有多人死于身体变异，他们周身萌发出白色的须状物，形同植物。马修向政府反映当地的生物危机，然而只得到冷漠的回应，人群的异化正在扩散，伊丽莎白和马修处境孤立，但仍然试图拯救城市……
