    在经历了许多的困难后——包括让泰勒相信他们的确来自未来——进取号的船员们成功地营救了两头座头鲸，并将它们带到未来，及时地拯救了地球。然后船员们被带到了联邦委员会的面前，接受众多的指控。没有被作为被告的斯波克也与其他船员们站在了一起。最后，鉴于他们新近的英勇表现，除了对柯克中将的控告外，针对其余被告的所有控告都被撤销。柯克以作为一名上级军官却违背命令的罪行被判有罪，并象征性地被降职为上校以示惩戒；但作为对他英勇行为的表彰，他被任命为联邦星舰进取号-A的舰长。与进取号船员一同来到23世纪的泰勒博士，决定加入星际舰队并成为一名科学官。                                    
    作为情节框架的支线剧情，展现了斯波克逐渐地恢复了他的记忆、他此前获得并接受的人类传统，以及他对自己情感的承认。在影片开始时，他不明白母亲询问他的“感觉”有何意义；但到最后，他已能足够意识到“感觉”对人类的重要性，并托父亲告诉母亲，他“感觉良好”。
