　　　　在马丁·斯科塞斯和托德·菲利普斯（《宿醉》）接连放弃执导《赌棍》后，《猩球崛起》导演鲁伯特·瓦耶特接下了这个翻拍项目。导演定下后，马克·沃尔伯格也确定加盟，出演男主角。最早马丁·斯科塞斯谈这个项目时，选定的男主角是莱昂纳多·迪卡普里奥，可惜斯科塞斯最终放弃了。                                    
                                       
    老版《赌棍》由卡雷尔·赖兹执导，詹姆斯·凯恩主演，于1974年上映。影片改编自陀思妥耶夫斯基的短篇小说，讲述了一名嗜好赌博的大学教授，让学生打假球以使自己在赌局中牟利，他的生活随着赌博开始失控，他拿一切东西打赌，最后陷入了万劫不复的泥潭之中。新版《赌棍》请到凭《无间行者》获奥斯卡最佳改编剧本奖的威廉·莫纳汉执笔剧本。                                    
                                       
    导演鲁伯特·瓦耶特之前曾被传为《星际迷航3》的候选导演，但目前并没有消息确认这一传言。马克·沃尔伯格目前正在忙《变形金刚4》，因此《赌棍》可能明年才能开拍，影片由派拉蒙出品。
