    霍华德离开后，珀尔在霍华德的农场同父亲（马修·桑德兰 Matthew Sunderland）母亲（坦蒂·莱特 Tandi Wright 饰）生活在一起。每天，珀尔不仅要应付数不清的农活，还要照料瘫痪生活不能自理的父亲。能够离开农场，成为明星是珀尔最大的心愿。一天，她的妯娌米斯蒂（艾玛·詹金斯·普罗 Emma Jenkins-Purro 饰）前来拜访，她告诉珀尔，镇子上来了人，要选拔舞蹈演员去军中表演，这是珀尔能够离开农场的唯一机会。
